A unit was installed on the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Twin Otter research aircraft to perform stereoscopic observation of the wind above Los Angeles.

Volcanic Ash

This event was monitored by a Doppler Lidar at the Chilbolton Observatory in the south of Great Britain.
Backscattering from the volcanic ash was detected approximately 2.5km above ground at around 12:00 pm, which descended to the atmospheric boundary layer at around 15:00 pm.

Applications

Wind measurement within a stadium

By utilizing the high directivity of the Doppler Lidar laser beam and directing the beam in a diagonal orientation, wind distribution can be measured in spaces where measurement cannot normally be performed. .
For example, the wind distribution above a sports stadium can be measured and used to help athletes be more competitive..
This information can also be provided to spectators to raise their level of interest in watching the game.
